A young kite stirred in her nest. Her wings had just feathered, and she was ready to be an apprentice. However, she had other desires.

"I want to be a healer," she simply stated to her dam. "I do not care what you think. I want to practice the art of it." She stared at a flowering bush underneath the nest-tree.

"But Greychick, your destiny is to be a great apprentice!" her dam argued.

"Mother, I don't care. I don't want to hurt other species of birds and fight. Fighting is not for me. I saw what Father did to help protect us from the Golden Eagle." Her memories blurred together. In one, he was alive and in the next, he was dead.

"Yes. That is why you must become a warrior!"

"No. I refuse." With a few flaps of her wings, she flew off.
